Healthy Living Week

The purpose of the Healthy Living Project was to educate first us and then the DRSS community about healthy living wither it be through healthy eating or exercise. Through this we needed to plan, and execute an event to encourage better eating habits or exercise. The requirements of this project was to write a proposal to be able to get approved and funded for our event. In this the proposal was divided into four sections (the problem, target audience, need, and solution) which every member wrote one section with the solution being written as a group. From this we had to orally present in from of a board of teacher and staff. From this we had to create written materials to teach the target audience what we learned. We used recipe cards for our content. In this cards we put the recipe and the nutrient information. After this we had to execute our event. My group’s event was specifically to encourage better eating habits of teachers. In this we planned the main dish(es), either a chicken salad wrap or a vegetable wrap, while other groups planned the side dishes and the desert, to serve on the teacher lunch on December 19th, in the presentation space. From this project in Biology we learned how cells get and use energy through methods and macromolecules such as, cellular respiration, carbohydrates, lipids, and proteins.  In this we had to connect the content we learned from Wellness and Fitness to the cellular aspect of the content. In Wellness and Fitness we learned about all the different types of foods (the food groups: Fruits, vegetables, grains, meats/beans, healthy drinks, and oils) in this we found the recommended guidelines for each food group. Adding, we also learned how eating too much or too little of a food group can cause and increase risks of diseases such as heart disease, stroke, and heart attack. In Language Arts we learned how to make outlines that we were to use to make our proposal. From this we learned how to make skeleton outlines to then make them into detailed outlines. And then to make the outline into a full written draft, or our written proposals to get the event approved and funded. This impacted my health personally by showing me that healthy food doesn't always have to be salads and that is can taste good as well. My biggest challenge in this project was trying to reduce my stress and grey hairs by working on time and managing my stress in a constructive way. In this I  made my own to do list and estimate the time it would take and adding  at least thirty minutes to allow for a break and extra time if I needed it to complete the task. I feel like this project will make me a better student by helping my time management skills which is an important part of being a successful student. This project is a great example of communication and collaboration from the fact that my group made sure in order to have a smooth project that we all were on the same page and talked about every decision we made and to make it as a group. So we could collectively move forward in the project. From the beginning of the project we made sure that we had many ways to be able to talk to each other in and out of school such as our phones, school email and on last resort Facebook. From this we were able to bounce ideas off each other and have a clear understanding of where the project was going that made the transitions very smooth to the execution.  As well, we made sure that every task of the project was divided in a way that could play off of each members strengths and be able to produce quality work in a timely manor. Such as in the preparation of the meal we made an assembly line to make the wraps (as pictured right), where I would take the chicken salad and spread it on the wrap while, Abby would roll it up and place it on the platter for Shari to take to the presentation space to be set up for the event. This is a special kind of collaboration because every group member was more than reliable and we all helped each other peer edit and revise so that no member would be stressed and left to worry over work yet to be done and if it was done to quality. I feel that in today’s world most collaboration is over a group of people that tolerate each other. That was not the case in my group. We all gave each other respect and kindness that put everyone in a positive mood and atmosphere that lead to our success. Over all, I feel like this was a very successful project and was executed in a professional manner.
